Seasons of Change

September 20, 2017

Maybe it’s seeing the colorful leaves changing. Maybe it’s feeling the briskness in the air. Maybe it’s smelling the aroma of pumpkin cookies. Maybe it’s watching the squirrels burying nuts. I love autumn! It’s definitely my favorite season.

In a way, I’m surprised at this because I don’t like change. I’m one of those people who enjoy sameness. If I’m happy with something that I’ve purchased, I don’t grow tired of it and feel the need for change—which is why I’ve had the same couch for 20 years, the same comforter for 10 years, and the same china since our wedding 35 years ago. It’s not that I’m boring! I do love new adventures. But when it comes to what surrounds me on a day-to-day basis, I like the familiar. Maybe it’s because keeping things the same feels like home to me.

But just as the seasons change, things in our lives change—and some of those changes aren’t welcome. We lose jobs. We lose relationships. We watch our parents age. We bury loved ones. Those are the toughest kinds of changes.

But today, I remembered a verse in the Bible that tells me of something—Someone—who will never change. Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” That’s pretty amazing, isn’t it? Especially given the fact that Jesus has always been there—even before the creation of the world. Yet He never changes! Today He is the same God who parted the Red Sea, who forgave King David, who touched the leper, who died on the cross, who rose again, and who went to Heaven to prepare a place for you and me.

Someday Jesus will come and make one permanent change. A change that I will be very okay with! Until then, I will take mental snapshots to remember the happy times when things in my life were the same. And hold on to the promise that Jesus is the same today as He was yesterday, and will be tomorrow.
