The Perfect Gift

December 8, 2017

Our Christmas Eve celebration was interrupted by a phone call from the local hospital. A girl who’d been attending my dad’s church had tried to end her life. Since I was an older teen, Dad asked me to go to the hospital with him.

I asked myself on the way to the ER, “Why would she do this at Christmas? It’s supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year!”

Dad left me alone in the room with her for a while. I pulled up a chair next to her bed and placed my hands in hers. Looking at her bandaged wrists made me feel a little woozy.

I did my best to bring hope to this girl who had none. I told her that hope for her troubled world had arrived some 2,000 years ago, in the form of a Baby. And that Baby was to grow up to be a Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace to the world.

If your own world feels troubled too this Christmas, the gift of Jesus offers you the same help. Here’s what He wants to be for you:

Wonderful Counselor: Do you have a problem and need someone to talk to? Jesus is a wonderful counselor! His words all through the Bible are full of answers and comfort. He’ll listen when you talk to him. Even with the whole universe to manage, He’s not too busy for you.

Mighty God: Are you afraid of something? You have a mighty God who will come to your rescue. He is strong. He fears nothing. Nothing is too big for Him.

Everlasting Father: If your dad is physically or emotionally absent, Jesus wants to be your everlasting father. That means He’ll be there for you forever. If an earthly parent has disappointed you, your heavenly one won’t. He’s everything you’ve ever wanted in a father.

Prince of Peace: If you’re anxious, He’ll give you peace. He’ll give it to you through His word as you search the Bible, and as you talk to Him about everything that worries you.

This Christmas, you’re not alone. God has given you the perfect gift! You’ve been given a Wonderful Counselor, a Mighty God, an Everlasting Father, and a Prince of Peace. His name is Jesus, and He’s God’s gift to you.

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)
